How Do You Keep Motivated to Work Out When You Like Not To?

Richard Uzelac’s 5 Ways to Motivate Yourself to Work Out

Find Your Why

Staying motivated to work out requires connecting to your purpose.

  • What are your goals? Better health? Weight loss? Define both short-term and long-term goals that align with your values and bring a sense of purpose to your fitness journey.
  • How will fitness improve your life?
  • What motivates you internally?

Reminding yourself of your motivations and the benefits of exercise makes it easier to persevere when you lack motivation. Set Meaningful Goals:

Set Intentions

Plan workouts and add them to your schedule in advance

  • Commit to the workout times you set
  • Tell a friend your workout goals for accountability

Setting clear intentions and sticking to them requires self-discipline but creates healthy habits over time. Start small if needed, but push yourself to turn intentions into action.

Start Small

When establishing a new workout routine, it’s important to start small and focus on sustainable changes.

  • If your goal is to exercise 5 days a week, begin with 2 days.
  • Try a short 15-20 minute workout rather than an hour if you’re pressed for time.
  • Walk or do bodyweight exercises instead of hardcore training.

The key is to simply move your body and build the habit, even if you can only dedicate a few minutes. Any progress and consistency with exercise will lead to increased motivation and fitness. Gradually increase duration and intensity. Small steps forward will add up!

Schedule It

Adding workouts to your calendar is key for consistency.

  • Plan ahead and commit to specific workout days/times.
  • Schedule workouts like any other important appointment.
  • Enlist a friend to hold you accountable.

Sticking to a routine requires discipline and turning down other commitments. But remembering your goals and all the benefits of exercise will provide motivation to honor workout appointments. Establishing a habit leads to long-term success.

Overcome Excuses

There will always be obstacles, but it’s important to persevere through them.

  • Identify common excuses upfront. Lack of time? Energy?
  • Have a backup plan for when life happens. Shorter workout?
  • Focus on how good you’ll feel after the workout rather than excuses.

Challenges are inevitable, but your commitment to regular exercise and your health can power you through. Defeat excuses through self-discipline and by focusing on your motivations. Your goals are worth the effort! Remember you can suffer now and enjoy a higher quality of life or suffer your health because you choose not to be healthy.
